What Local Services Ads are
Local Services Ads (LSAs) are a separate Google ad product for service businesses. They appear at the top of relevant local searches, showing your business name, rating, service area and a verification badge, with a button to call or message. Instead of paying per click, Google's Local Services help says you pay only when a customer gets in touch through your ad, for leads related to the services you offer.
LSAs sit alongside, not instead of, normal Search ads. Many trades run both: LSAs for the badge and pay-per-lead pricing, and Google Ads for searches and areas LSAs don't cover. See also marketing for trades.
Is your business eligible in the UK?
Eligibility depends on both your category and your postcode. Google's Local Services help page lists home service categories including appliance repair, carpenters, carpet cleaning, cleaning, electricians, fencing, flooring, garage doors, handymen, HVAC, pest control, plumbers, roofers, tree services, window cleaning and window repair. It also lists professional services, including several types of lawyer, estate agent services and personal injury services, as available in Greater London only.
Google's list isn't marked country by country, and coverage changes, so we check your exact category and postcode in Google's own sign-up before you commit any time. If LSAs aren't available for you, a well-run local Search campaign does a similar job on a pay-per-click basis.
If you cover several towns, we map your real service area against the postcodes Google offers, so you aren't paying for leads from places you'd rather not travel to.
Verification and the Google Verified badge
Google used to run separate Google Guaranteed, Google Screened and License Verified badges. Search Engine Land reported that from 20 October 2025 these were replaced by a single Google Verified badge, and the money-back guarantee attached to Google Guaranteed was dropped. Businesses already verified were moved across automatically, according to a notice from the British Pest Control Association.
For UK businesses, Google's help page lists what's needed to start showing ads before the badge is earned: business registration, headshots, reviews depending on category requirements, and completed billing and budget. For UK professional categories, business registration is the licensing check. Ads without the badge show below providers who have completed every step, so we push verification through as quickly as the checks allow.
Leads, budgets and what's changing
Results in LSAs depend heavily on how you handle leads. Answer calls quickly, reply to messages, mark booked jobs and ask happy customers for reviews. We set the weekly budget and lead settings to match the work you can actually take, and pause service areas or job types you don't want. Your review count and rating are visible in the ad, so we also help you set up a simple routine for asking customers for Google reviews after each job.
Two changes are worth knowing about. PPC Land reported in September 2026 that Google will charge LSA advertisers, from 1 October 2026, for business-hours calls that go unanswered if the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds; the notice it describes didn't state which countries are covered, so we treat it as applying until Google says otherwise. The same report says Google is moving LSAs into Google Ads as a pay-per-lead Performance Max campaign type, starting with US advertisers in 2026, with non-US accounts scheduled for 2027. We'll manage the switch when it reaches UK accounts.

Frequently asked questions
Are Google Local Services Ads available in the UK?
Yes, for certain categories and areas. Google lists home services such as plumbers, electricians, roofers, cleaners and pest control, and some professional services in Greater London only. Coverage depends on category and postcode, so we check yours in Google's sign-up first.
How do you pay for Local Services Ads?
You pay Google per lead, not per click. Google's help says you pay only when a customer gets in touch through your ad about services you offer. Lead prices vary by trade and area. Our management fee is separate, from £150 a month + VAT.
What happened to the Google Guaranteed badge?
Search Engine Land reported that from 20 October 2025 Google replaced Google Guaranteed, Google Screened and License Verified with a single Google Verified badge. The money-back guarantee was dropped. Businesses already verified were updated automatically.
What do I need to get verified?
For UK accounts, Google lists business registration, headshots, reviews where your category requires them, and completed billing and budget to start showing ads. Further checks depend on category. We help gather the evidence and work through each step.
Should I use Local Services Ads or Google Search ads?
Often both. LSAs give you the badge, top placement and pay-per-lead pricing where available. Search ads cover keywords, services and areas LSAs don't, and give more control over wording. We compare cost per lead across both each month.
Will I be charged for missed calls?
PPC Land reported that from 1 October 2026 Google will charge for unanswered business-hours calls where the caller waits more than 20 seconds. The notice didn't name the countries covered, so we plan as if it applies and set hours you can genuinely answer.
